Harrow the Ninth, the New York Times and USA Today bestselling sequel to Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the Emperor's haunted space station。

“Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space! Decadent nobles vie to serve the deathless emperor! Skeletons!” —Charles Stross on Gideon the Ninth

“Unlike anything I've ever read。” —V。E。 Schwab on Gideon the Ninth

“Deft, tense and atmospheric, compellingly immersive and wildly original。” —The New York Timeson Gideon the Ninth

She answered the Emperor's call。

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend。

In victory, her world has turned to ash。

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem。 Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the Emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders。

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her Emperor to fight an unwinnable war。 Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath—but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her。

Sealed in the gothic gloom of the Emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

I liked the core story here, and think that Tamsyn is a very creative writer。 However, it's pretty clear that the publisher gave her a specific word count to hit, because there's a ton of filler stuffed in here that I don't believe she'd have written otherwise。 I'm not exaggerating when I say that nothing happens in the first 400 pages。 OMG。 I was so bored。 I knew that eventually something would happen, but I had no idea it would take that long。 How many times are we going to have tea with t I liked the core story here, and think that Tamsyn is a very creative writer。 However, it's pretty clear that the publisher gave her a specific word count to hit, because there's a ton of filler stuffed in here that I don't believe she'd have written otherwise。 I'm not exaggerating when I say that nothing happens in the first 400 pages。 OMG。 I was so bored。 I knew that eventually something would happen, but I had no idea it would take that long。 How many times are we going to have tea with the emperor? How many biscuits are we going to have to watch Harrow eat? I get why publishers love trilogies and shoot for specific word counts, since they know how to squeeze the last cent out of a story, but how I wish they'd just knock it off。 It's at times like these that I'm happy I'm an Indie author。 As much as I was bored reading those 400 pages, imagine how the author felt trying to write them。So anyway, be prepared to wade through those pages。 But then, after you do, a pretty cool story happens and the plot actually moves! Yay! I'll probably get the 3rd volume when it shows up, but after having to read that first part, I'm not sure I can stomach more of that。 So we'll see。 There's really two books here - the first part, which is like 2 stars thanks to how boring it was, and then the second, which is a solid 4。 So I'm settling on 3。 。。。more

Harrow the Ninth is a great follow-up to Gideon the Ninth。 The plot is such that the first half or so is completely wrong based on what we know happened in the first book。 There are hints along the way, of course, as to why this might be, and yes, this is all wrong。 The suspicious reader will (and I did from the very beginning) pick up on just how nice the Emperor Undying is and just what the lictors/teachers might be up to。 There are, of course, many other things that come out of left field and Harrow the Ninth is a great follow-up to Gideon the Ninth。 The plot is such that the first half or so is completely wrong based on what we know happened in the first book。 There are hints along the way, of course, as to why this might be, and yes, this is all wrong。 The suspicious reader will (and I did from the very beginning) pick up on just how nice the Emperor Undying is and just what the lictors/teachers might be up to。 There are, of course, many other things that come out of left field and add a good amount of surprise once the mysteries begin to unravel in the last third of the book。 Who is the Sleeper and why is it trying to kill everyone? What happened to Harrow's memory? And why is someone trying to kill Harrow? These all get resolved in some fantastic and brilliant ways。 My favorite thing about the book is Harrow and Ianthe's relationship。 Hilarious and sometimes even touching, their relationship is just a delight to read。 The audiobook experience is especially fun (kudos to Moira Quirk!)I did want a bit more about the letters by the end of this book。 I also wanted more about Gideon's whole situation and the revelations about Gideon's life。 Tamsyn Muir excels at playfully embellished narration that takes its time to unfurl, but the final third of the book did pack most of the important plot developments while the first part lacked a bit in that department。 Overall, Harrow the Ninth was entertaining and moving with great rewards for the patient reader。 Recommended for those who like bad romance novels, heavy swords, deep rivers and orange hazmat suits。 。。。more

Really didn't like this at all。 I wasn't a massive fan of the first book, but this one really didn't gel with me at all。 I found the plot, characters and the writing style very confusing。 Really didn't like this at all。 I wasn't a massive fan of the first book, but this one really didn't gel with me at all。 I found the plot, characters and the writing style very confusing。 。。。more

This is a unique and outstanding setting and world with characters that would remember a long time。 It doesn't happen many times with me when I read things in space, but this one definitely stood out。 I loved both the books。 This is a unique and outstanding setting and world with characters that would remember a long time。 It doesn't happen many times with me when I read things in space, but this one definitely stood out。 I loved both the books。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was a great follow-up to Gideon the Ninth, very different tone but an even more compelling mystery。 I loved seeing Harrow fleshed out more and learning about the universe。 I gotta say I was really hoping Gideon would play a larger role in the plot but this was A+ stuff。

An absolute narrative masterpiece。 I'm left speechless。 The book took me so long because I just didn't want it to end, I didn't want to let go of the characters again。 I'm getting way too attached to this whole series and absolutely can't wait for the next part。 An absolute narrative masterpiece。 I'm left speechless。 The book took me so long because I just didn't want it to end, I didn't want to let go of the characters again。 I'm getting way too attached to this whole series and absolutely can't wait for the next part。 。。。more

Poor Harrow, somehow a book about her didn’t even end up being really about her。 A slow start but once the parameters of the puzzle started to resolve, it became pretty intriguing。 Audiobook a must, the narrator does such good voices for the all the different lichters。

The last third of this book is a solid 4 stars, but I felt like I had to slog through it to get there。 Didn't enjoy the writing style of "you did this" as opposed to "I did" or "they did", I do understand the reasoning behind it, but getting there took too long, and jumping around made me feel lost。I did enjoy following Harrow's story but it doesn't have the same feel as Gideon's - it's more 'space adventure' than the last ones 'fantasy mystery'。Probably won't bother with the next one。 The last third of this book is a solid 4 stars, but I felt like I had to slog through it to get there。 Didn't enjoy the writing style of "you did this" as opposed to "I did" or "they did", I do understand the reasoning behind it, but getting there took too long, and jumping around made me feel lost。I did enjoy following Harrow's story but it doesn't have the same feel as Gideon's - it's more 'space adventure' than the last ones 'fantasy mystery'。Probably won't bother with the next one。 。。。more

like。 okay。1) i read this in one sitting, because i can, so it's clearly, like, decent2) there are a lot of parts of this that are stronger than Gideon。 there are also a lot of parts that are weaker。 a lot of it is the same。3) can i just add now in hindsight, with all the strengths and weaknesses, it is so very patently obvious that the author is a hamsteak? how did i miss this?4) i will read the next parts。 i still think Gideon was stronger。 i think Muir needs to tie this together very neatly w like。 okay。1) i read this in one sitting, because i can, so it's clearly, like, decent2) there are a lot of parts of this that are stronger than Gideon。 there are also a lot of parts that are weaker。 a lot of it is the same。3) can i just add now in hindsight, with all the strengths and weaknesses, it is so very patently obvious that the author is a hamsteak? how did i miss this?4) i will read the next parts。 i still think Gideon was stronger。 i think Muir needs to tie this together very neatly with a very big bow to make this pay off。5) LESBIANS6) how foolish of me to expect Goodreads to use markdown 🙃 。。。more

Listened on audiobook and read along in a hard copy。 Phew, what an amazing book and sequel。 While I was challenged in the first half/two thirds to figure out just what in the heck was going on and why everything contradicted everything in Gideon the Ninth, I'm so glad I held on, as I flew though the last 4-5 hours of this book。 I am most definitely eagerly awaiting the 3rd installment! Not quite as breathtakingly bonkers as Gideon the Ninth。 And honestly, it was a little slow until the last 100 pages or so。 But I love the writing style, I love the characters, and I'm kicking myself for starting an unfinished series because it's going to be a while (fall 2022, sigh) before I can find out what happens next 。。。 Not quite as breathtakingly bonkers as Gideon the Ninth。 And honestly, it was a little slow until the last 100 pages or so。 But I love the writing style, I love the characters, and I'm kicking myself for starting an unfinished series because it's going to be a while (fall 2022, sigh) before I can find out what happens next 。。。 。。。more

It was great to get back to the weird world of the space Necromancers。 Yet, this book, by its design was very confusing and hard to follow。 I had to re-read sections to figure out what happened to still be confused。 The middle of the book was a bit of a slog and the rewrite of history very jarring。 The last twelve chapters really came together and the story finally moved at pace。 It did seem like Harrow becomes less important as the rest of the characters get ther plots resolved, but not our her It was great to get back to the weird world of the space Necromancers。 Yet, this book, by its design was very confusing and hard to follow。 I had to re-read sections to figure out what happened to still be confused。 The middle of the book was a bit of a slog and the rewrite of history very jarring。 The last twelve chapters really came together and the story finally moved at pace。 It did seem like Harrow becomes less important as the rest of the characters get ther plots resolved, but not our hero。 It's a middle book for certain。 。。。more

wha。。。。。。。。。^^^my reaction through most of this book, punctuated by "oh my god" and "aaaah!!!"This novel is opaque, which feels maddening at times。 (Do I know what happened in the last few chapters? Is the pay off worth it when you start the book? Yes。 All I’ll say is that listening to the audiobook for this story has really unlocked what the author does in this story。 Yes you start in second person because you’re seeing harrow and her actions through Gideon。 That is apparent up front in the Audiobook。 Not a spoiler。 Secondly, I marked it off a star because while this book is ambitious and the story is Authentic with a capital A, the first half of the book is rough while we as the reader tr Is the pay off worth it when you start the book? Go ahead。 I cannot wait to read the next book。 This did something in terms of risks and story and payoff that I don’t even see men doing in fantasy/sci-fi…。 I’m just shoook。 。。。more
